In collaboration with government and industry partners, our research seeks to address real-world problems at the intersection of public policy, sustainability & innovation. We have a diverse portfolio of projects with a focus on one or more of the below themes.
Environmental and Sustainability Policy
Our work has a special emphasis on the role of institutions (e.g., policies, regulations, norms, and decision-making processes) in addressing pressing sustainability issues. Under this theme, our interests include, but are not limited to, marine and coastal social-ecological systems, offshore renewable energy, aquaculture, ecosystem restoration, and societal adaptation to climate change.
Governance of Novel and Emerging Technologies
We are interested in understanding the policy and regulatory implications of novel and emerging technologies for environmental outcomes. This includes the governance of conservation gene drives, regulatory issues associated with technological interventions for coral reef restoration, and the deployment of biopesticides.
Complex, large-scale sustainability issues cannot be addressed using traditional approaches alone. A key focus of our work is on policy and governance innovation (e.g., anticipatory regulation and reflexive governance) in the context of environmental, social and technological change.
